I purchased a BMW X3 xdrive 20D MSport few days ago. The car was registered in November 2016 so it is still less than three years old. Service history shows that it was serviced by BMW in Feb 2018 and it has only done 6k miles since then. I was just checking the status of service requirements in iDrive and it shows that Brake fluid needs changing.
According to them it is "lifetime" which means until warranty ends, in BMWs case thats 50,000 miles. The ZF tranny needs new fluid every 60,000 miles, but you theoretically can extend the change to 100K miles (not recommended, but tranny will survive). Independent mechanics will service the tranny.
In order to go 200k+ miles without an issue, people who know what they're talking about recommend changing the fluid at 30k miles. You MUST use only the BMW fluid. 1 quart (or is it liter?) is all you'll need, at ~$65, which means about $32/year if amortized. Still much cheaper than oil changes. It's an easy fluid change.
An "Oil Level Sensor Malfunction" indicates that the sensor system is not working correctly. It can't measure the oil level accurately. After 5500 miles of "spirited" driving, my oil level display finally showed the engine to be 1/4 quart low. I added 1/4 quart of BMW spec oil and it still indicated a "low" reading after a day of driving.
