The exhaust brake and the retarder are secondary engine brakes. The exhaust brake is generally activated during braking or manually by a separate control (generally a button on the floor). The retarder is a more powerful version that holds the engine back when desired speed is exceeded (on hills and the like). Retarders work against the engines
